Learn About Our Senior Adult Inpatient Program

Overview of the senior adult inpatient program at Crestwyn in Memphis, TN

Senior adults experience symptoms of mental illness differently than other populations. Based on their stage of life, cognitive states, and physical abilities, the symptoms they display may be greatly varied. In order to accommodate the specific needs of this population, Crestwyn Behavioral Health offers an inpatient psychiatric program dedicated to individuals of advanced age.

Patients in this program will participate in therapeutic interventions that are customized to meet their unique physical, mental, and emotional needs. Our staff welcomes each individual with the knowledge and understanding that no two people are exactly alike, and therefore tailors their treatment plan to care for them in a way that will be of most benefit to them.

In addition to the therapeutic aspects of programming being customized to meet the needs of this population, our facilities are also tailored to accommodate potential physical limitations, with features such as medical beds that adjust to enhance the patient’s comfort.

All staff members who work directly with patients in the senior adult program are required to undergo specialized training so that they are cognizant of how best to care for this specific population. We also employ physicians and nurses who specialize in working with the geriatric population.

Our director of dietary management ensures that all patients receive healthy meals while they are at Crestwyn. Also, a dietician is available to teach patients how to maintain proper nutrition after they transition out of our care.

Types of Treatment

Types of treatment used in the senior adult inpatient program at Crestwyn in Memphis, TN

The comprehensive programming that we implement for senior adults is founded on evidence-based principles but is targeted differently in order to accommodate the needs of the patients. The treatment modalities that our staff focuses on during therapy include motivational enhancement, multisensory and reminiscence therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Group therapy is the most prominent therapeutic intervention used within the senior adult inpatient program. Group therapy has many benefits for patients, offering them an opportunity to connect with others who may be experiencing similar circumstances. Additionally, these sessions give patients a chance to explore various topics that pertain to mental and behavioral health and to develop coping skills that allow them to handle the challenges they are facing in a healthier way.

Examples of the types of groups that patients in the senior adult program may participate in include:

  • Psychoeducational groups
  • Goals groups
  • Activity groups (e.g., arts and crafts)
  • Leisure groups (e.g., bingo)
  • Process groups
  • Exercise groups
  • Cognitive stimulation groups

Within these various groups, the topics that may be covered will be based on the specific population who is participating in the group at the time. Examples of topics that may be discussed include:

  • Grief and loss
  • Transition and aging
  • Emotional expression
  • Sensory reminiscence
  • Coping strategies

In addition to group therapy, patients in the senior adult program are able to receive individual therapy on an as-needed basis. Medication management services are available as well, with both psychiatrists and nursing staff working closely with patients to manage their medication needs. Patients who enter the program already taking medication will not have to worry about breaking their regimen.

Family involvement can be instrumental in achieving successful outcomes in treatment. We want our patients and their families to remain connected throughout the treatment process. Additionally, we encourage family members to actively participate in their loved one’s care. Upon receiving consent from the patient, therapists will involve family members as much as possible in various aspects of the patient’s care. We believe that this will enhance the patient’s overall treatment experience as they receive ongoing support from those they are closest to.

Admissions Process

Admissions details for the senior adult inpatient program at Crestwyn in Memphis, TN

When any patient comes to Crestwyn seeking treatment services, our staff conducts a comprehensive assessment in order to determine which program will best meet the individual’s needs. This assessment will give our team the background information we need not only to determine if we can provide the specific type of care the patient requires, but also to prepare an appropriate treatment plan should the patient be admitted into the program.

In addition to this assessment, our staff will also provide prescreening labs to ensure that the patient is medically capable of participating in programming. Should there be a significant medical concern, we will set up a transport to the nearest hospital. Crestwyn is in partnership with and in close proximity to a number of medical centers.

All admissions are determined on a case-by-case basis. Patients who receive care in our senior adult program must be able to actively engage in programming and have certain physical capabilities, such as being able to reposition themselves. However, we are able to make accommodations for various physical limitations, which can be discussed at the time of admission. Patients who are in the late stage of dementia may not be able to receive care at our facility, but that will likewise be reviewed at the time of the admissions assessment.

Our goal is to make our programming accessible to as many people as possible. If you have any questions about admissions criteria or exclusionary criteria, please do not hesitate to reach out to our intake department at your convenience.
