Oxycodone is a substance found in many popular prescription painkillers such as Percodan, Percocet, OxyContin, and Tylox, and when used under the supervision of a doctor, these substances can provide valuable pain relief in instances following surgery or injury and more. As part of a comprehensive plan for healing, oxycodone is a useful tool that, if administered and ingested properly, is a safe substance.

However, the chemical makeup of oxycodone means that it can be highly addictive when taken for longer amounts of time than directed or when abused for the euphoric state it is known to create. And as an opioid, once a person has fallen victim to an addiction to oxycodone, it can be extremely difficult to cease one’s use without professional help.

But with the proper supports in place, individuals can cleanse their minds and bodies of substances of abuse such as oxycodone, and can work towards living a life that is free from prescription painkillers. By choosing to enter treatment, a sober, substance-free life is achievable.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for Oxycodone addiction

When someone you care about is abusing oxycodone, bearing witness to his or her deteriorating health can be a difficult process. But if you wish to assist your friend or family member in accessing care to treat his or her addiction, it may be helpful to consider the following:

  • Begin by learning all you can about addiction, and focus on gaining a greater understanding the signs and symptoms of oxycodone.
  • Having gained more insight into chemical dependency, use what you know to search out treatment programs in your loved one’s area that offer services and supports that you believe would be a good fit for him or her.
  • Maintain a loving and empathic stance throughout all your communication with your loved one. Discussions about entering treatment can be difficult, but remember to keep calm and offer your support in a way that shows your true desire to see your loved one well again.
  • Even though your focus during this time is aimed at seeing your loved one enter treatment, be careful not to neglect your own wellbeing. Take time for yourself, and do things that rejuvenate you so that you have the strength you need to support the person you care about as he or she prepares to make the brave transition into treatment.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for Oxycodone addiction at Crestwyn Behavioral Health Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee

Despite its legal status, oxycodone is still a highly dangerous substance. When used inappropriately, it can cause many damages to one’s physical and mental health, and as it becomes the center of one’s life, all other once important factors will no longer be prioritized as they once were. This scenario often means that men and women who abuse oxycodone will face personal and professional consequences that will have significant costs, and they may not be able to achieve sobriety without professional help in a treatment center that offers multidisciplinary support for oxycodone-dependent individuals.

In light of all the negativity that addiction can cause, there is some positive news. As the opioid crisis has grown, so too has the number of options available for those seeking care for chemical dependence. While the road to recovery does indeed have many challenges, hope for a fully recovered life is possible when one chooses to engage with the proper modes of support.

All patients will be provided with individualized treatment plans that will guide them throughout their stay at Crestwyn. Board-certified psychiatrists, counselors, social workers, nurses, activity therapists, and teachers round out the exemplary staff that delivers care at this hospital. In addition to various levels of licensure and certification, many of the staff members have specialized training in Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR). As such, patients who choose to receive treatment at Crestwyn can rest assured that they will be supplied with a comprehensive approach to care.

The following interventions may be included as part of each patient’s individualized treatment plan:

Detoxification: When individuals are battling an addiction to oxycodone, they may benefit from participation in the detoxification services that are offered. As part of detox, individuals will have any substances of abuse physiologically removed from their systems in a monitored environment where their comfort and safety are ensured.

Medication management: If an individual is suffering from the symptoms of a mental health disorder in addition to an oxycodone addiction, certain psychotropic medications may be included in his or her plan of care. Psychiatrists work with patients to determine whether or not medications would benefit them, and nurses and nurse practitioners oversee the administration of any medications that are prescribed. Medication management services, including meetings with a psychiatrist, occur on a daily basis.

Individual therapy: Provided on a daily or as-needed basis, individual therapy sessions offer patients a time to meet one-on-one with their primary counselor in a safe and confidential setting. During these sessions, patients have the opportunity to openly discuss any concerns that they have and to process through their experiences in treatment. Individual therapy can also be an ideal setting for patients to work through how their oxycodone addictions have impacted their lives, and learn ways that they can prevent future relapse.

Group therapy: Counselors, nurses, and mental health technicians lead the various group therapy sessions that patients can participate in during their time at Crestwyn. Group therapy provides individuals who are battling an addiction to oxycodone with an opportunity to come together with others who may be experiencing similar struggles and challenges. In this forum, they can give and receive support to and from their peers, which offers an additional benefit of helping patients come to realize that they are not alone. Group therapy sessions are held daily and can include community groups, psychoeducation groups, and 12-Step recovery groups. The topics covered during the different sessions will vary, but may include the following:

  • Anger management
  • Goal-setting
  • Healthy relationships
  • Medication support
  • Recovery skills
  • Suicide prevention
  • Treatment options

Family therapy: Family therapy sessions can be an optimal setting for patients to process through their addictions to oxycodone with those closest to them. In this setting, family members can discuss how their loved one’s addiction has impacted their lives, which can be the beginning step towards healing within patients’ most important relationships. Additionally, family therapy sessions can provide patients’ loved ones with an opportunity to learn both about addiction and about the ways in which they can support and encourage their loved one during and after treatment. When indicated, family therapy is incorporated into each patient’s treatment plan based on his or her needs and/or the proximity of his or her family members.

Education / tutoring: For patients in the adolescent program, educational and tutoring services are provided by certified teachers so as to prevent young people from falling behind academically while receiving treatment. Designated schooling times are incorporated into each adolescent’s daily programming.

With a recognition that inpatient treatment is often only the beginning step towards ongoing recovery from an addiction to oxycodone, the staff at Crestwyn Behavioral Health work with patients to form thorough discharge plans so that appropriate continuity of care can be assured as their time at Crestwyn comes to an end. Assessment counselors, treatment teams, and patients’ individual therapists will all work in collaboration with each patient to determine which aftercare options are most appropriate for him or her.
